Enhanced stage design and amphitheatre improvements will facilitate major community events while providing shaded seating areas, opening up views and saving the community up to $100,000 a year in hire costs.
Mayor Bill Ludwig said the enhancements are part of Stage 3 of the Beachfront Revitalisation currently under construction and jointly funded by the State Government through Royalties for Regions.
“The ‘state of the art’ stage redesign will incorporate a ‘slim’ profile roof structure that will also provide year round shade for beachgoers and visitors,” Cr Ludwig said.
“The original stage design was always meant to have a permanent roof however budget constraints at the time meant the roof component had to be deferred.
“The new design will see the concrete stage walls removed to fully open up the ocean views and provide much needed shaded seating areas for the community when the stage is not in use.
“This will also save event organisers and community groups thousands of dollars in costs for temporary stage and shade cover for each and every major event,” Cr Ludwig said.
Deputy Mayor Graham Scott said Council had gone to great lengths to get stakeholder input to ensure the most functional and best aesthetic design possible.
“Last year Council formed a ‘think-tank’ focus group comprised of representatives from community user groups, major event organisers, local business stakeholders, urban designers and arts groups.
“The focus group provided invaluable input and innovative ideas to activate the foreshore, facilitate holding major events and street scape improvements.
“Beat Architects, which designed the new Yeppoon Town Hall, has developed a design that makes the stage area more functional for everyday use, restores the spectacular views and complements the beachfront site.
“Community feedback on the design would be welcomed,” Cr Scott said.
