Livingstone Shire Council is inviting residents and visitors to ‘Get into Nature and Grow’ for National Tree Day on Sunday 27 July at Mulambin Beach.
Councillor Adam Belot who holds the Council portfolio for Water, Waste Management and the Environment said that National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event. Each year over 200,000 people take part in National Tree Day events at 3,000 sites organised by councils, schools, businesses and communities.
“It is the perfect opportunity to connect with nature and the local community,” Councillor Belot said.
“Livingstone Shire Council is very committed to managing our region’s natural resources and has supported National Tree Day for over ten years.”
“The trees we plant increase biodiversity, provides habitat for native wildlife, helps stabilise coastal sand dunes and improves air quality. Natural vegetation plays a critical role in the sustainability of our coastal environment,” Councillor Belot said.
This year National Tree Day’s theme; “Get into Nature and Grow” focuses on encouraging people to green up both their indoor and outdoor environments.
Council, in conjunction with Ian Weigh Toyota and volunteers, is aiming to plant 1,500 trees and shrubs this year.
Councillor Belot encourages the community to get involved and show their care for the environment they live in by coming along to Mulambin Beach on the day.
“A wise person once said the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, and the second best time to plant a tree is today”.
“With this quote in mind, I hope a large group of volunteers will give up a small part of their day to help with the plantings. Some tools will be provided, however volunteers should bring along covered footwear, hat and gloves.”
“Ian Weigh Toyota is again sponsoring the event with a free sausage sizzle for participants. Light refreshments will be provided,” Councillor Belot said.
