Livingstone Shire Council Supports Capricorn Coast Landcare For Clean Up Australia Day

Livingstone Shire Council is urging the Capricorn Coast community to participate in Clean Up Australia Day (Sunday, 5 March 2023) to help keep the Shire’s beaches, waterways, wetlands, and creeks in healthy condition for everyone to enjoy.

Council is partnering with Capricorn Coast Landcare Group to encourage the community to participate and will arrange to pick up collected rubbish from registered sites.

Capricorn Coast Landcare’s Clean Up Australia Day Event will be held on Saturday March 4th, from 8.00 am to 10.00 am. People can participate as a part of their local community group or with their family, friends and colleagues.

Councillor Andrea Friend, Portfolio holder of Water, Waste Management and the Environment, said it’s easy to lend a hand on Clean Up Australia Day.

“Community groups, businesses, schools, and youth groups can host a clean-up event by registering a site on the Clean Up Australia Day website or contacting Capricorn Coast Landcare to join in at an existing site if you’re by yourself,” Councillor Friend said.

“We recognise the significant contribution Capricorn Coast Landcare makes to the region in managing our natural resources in a sustainable way and providing a valuable social outlet to the community.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone out and about on the Coast over the weekend, taking practical and tangible action to improve our local environment. I will be at Merv Anderson Park for a few hours on the 4th of March, doing my bit for the region’s environment and ecology.”

Capricorn Coast Landcare Group’s Envirolink Coordinator, Sara Hillman, said Clean Up Australia is an event the Group looks forward to every year.

“Capricorn Coast Landcare are pleased to announce we will host a Community Clean-up Event to support the Clean-up Australia Day campaign. Our group has participated in this activity for a few years now. This year we will again be working with Livingstone Shire Council to achieve the best possible outcome for our environment,” Ms Hillman said.

“We will be aiming to clean up our Fig Tree Creek mangrove and adjacent park areas as we did in October 2022. These environmentally significant areas are used and enjoyed by so many community members, and unfortunately, this is often where waste is dumped, and litter collects.

“We will be counting on community support to step up and lend a hand to collect rubbish that might otherwise end up in our oceans.

“If you want to make a difference, have a bit of fun and meet like-minded people who care about our environment, we hope to see you there with sun-safe clothing, closed-in footwear, a hat and a reusable water bottle. In addition, we can provide gloves, collection bags and refreshments.”

Volunteers participating in Capricorn Coast Landcare’s Clean Up Australia Day Event are asked to meet at Merv Anderson Park, to the left of the car park, at 8.00 am for a safety briefing and site induction.

Groups that require assistance to dispose of collected rubbish can register their clean-up site with Capricorn Coast Landcare, and Livingstone Shire Council will dispose of the accumulated waste.
