Council Launches Community Consultation for Walking Network Plan

With funding secured from Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Council is embarking on an ambitious journey to create a comprehensive Walking Network Plan and priority works program that will elevate pedestrian experiences with the Shire.

The plan identifies destinations that are likely to generate pedestrian traffic, categorizing some as primary destinations due to their local significance. This approach ensures that residents and visitors can enjoy the convenience of efficient pathways that encourage exploration, leisure, and active transportation.

A central aspect of this initiative is the enhancement of path networks in the Yeppoon and Emu Park CBDs, which will facilitate better access to neighbouring communities and public transport services. This enhancement aligns with the community's expressed desire for simplified travel and an improved quality of life.

Portfolio holder of Planning and Strategic Infrastructure, Councillor Clint Swadling said the Walking Network Plan will have far reaching effects in connecting the Shire’s pedestrians.

"Our Walking Network Plan will play a pivotal role in fostering enhanced connectivity by identifying primary routes that link important destinations in both Yeppoon and Emu Park. This initiative aligns closely with our vision of creating a vibrant and pedestrian-friendly environment.

"As we embark on this journey to create a more walkable and interconnected community, we invite everyone to participate in the community consultation. Your input will play an essential role in shaping the future of pedestrian infrastructure in Yeppoon and Emu Park," Councillor Swadling said.

Portfolio holder of Healthy and Inclusive Community, Councillor Pat Eastwood said Council is committed to promoting physical activity and fostering a healthy lifestyle.

"We are excited about the positive impact that the Walking Network Plan will have on our community's health and well-being. By prioritizing pedestrian pathways, we are encouraging physical activity and active transportation, which are essential for building a healthier and more inclusive community.

"The Walking Network Plan is a significant step towards creating a community that prioritizes well-being and inclusivity. By providing safe and accessible pathways, we are enabling all members of the community to enjoy our beautiful surroundings.”

Council will be seeking valuable insights and feedback to ensure that the Walking Network Plan effectively meets the needs of the community. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to contribute their ideas and perspectives, ensuring that the plan reflects the aspirations of the broader community.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the consultation process and share their thoughts through Council’s Get Involved page.
