Council’s Tips on How To Save on Your Next Water Bill

Back

Livingstone Shire Council recently adopted its 2023-24 Budget and, in an effort, to encourage conservation of water across the Shire, Council has made changes to the water consumption billing tiers and charges which will be reflective in October’s notice.

Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Holder of Organisational Performance, Councillor Adam Belot said everyone can do tangible things to reduce their excessive water consumption.

“There are tangible things all of us can do to reduce our water consumption, including switching from baths to showers if possible, keeping the sprinklers off as much as possible, turning off running taps, making sure your dishwasher is full before running a wash and use leftover cooking water to water your plants, to name a few.

“Water is one of our most precious resources and we must use it responsibly.

“If you have not received your water notice or if you are experiencing financial difficulties and cannot pay this notice by the due date, please call Council on 1300 790 919 who will be able to assist you,” Councillor Belot said.

In Livingstone Shire Council’s 2023-24 Budget, water has:

  • Increased for commercial consumption by .25c/kl.
  • Increased for the residential 1st tier level by .10c/kl (tier decreased 15kl for all tiers).
  • Increased for the residential 2nd tier level by .15c/kl (tier decreased 15kl for all tiers).
  • Increased for the residential 3rd tier level by .31c/kl (tier decreased 15kl for all tiers).

To encourage water conservation, Deputy Mayor, Councillor Adam Belot has offered the following tips for families and businesses:

  • Watering lawns and gardens in the early morning and late afternoons is great for gardens and avoids the hot suns evaporation effects during the middle of the day.
  • Baths are great for little babies and little children especially if you put a few in together.
  • Us older ones all enjoy a soothing bath after a hard day’s work, yet a shower does use far less water, so maybe save it for a treat at the end of the week.
  • Pet water bowls that are less likely to be tipped over will reduce water and help to keep pets hydrated during the warmer months.
  • Address any water leaks in your property or business sooner rather than later. A dripping faucet or a leaking pipe can waste a significant amount of water over time.
  • Consider installing water-saving fixtures such as low-flow toilets, faucets, and showerheads. These can significantly reduce water consumption.
  • Install rainwater harvesting systems to collect rainwater for outdoor use, reducing reliance on treated water.
  • Brushing your teeth with the tap off.
  • Going easy with the hose.

Water notices will be issued by 31 October 2023 and are due 30 November 2023.
