Share what home means to you in the inaugural Love Livingstone Street Flag Contest
Get ready to unleash your creativity with the launch of Livingstone Shire Council’s inaugural 'Love Livingstone Street Flag Contest,' inviting artists of all ages and abilities to showcase their talent and celebrate the unique charm of Livingstone.
Officially opening today, the contest aims to engage community members, showcase local artists, beautify public spaces, and celebrate the Shire's distinctive character.
Winning artworks will adorn prominent street flags within Yeppoon throughout the year, between major events, enhancing the visual landscape and fostering a sense of community pride and belonging.
Aligned with the Livingstone Community Plan's vision of a welcoming, connected, and resilient community, the contest seeks submissions that reflect six diverse themes that encourage artists to explore and interpret what home means to them:
• Nature – landscape, wildlife, water, parks, flowers, trails;
• Active Living – cycling, walking, yoga, physical activity, and sports;
• Arts and Culture – music, dance, theatre, visual arts, cultural diversity, new traditions, heritage;
• Connection – between people and/or places, or community past to present;
• Community – festivals and events, intergenerational inclusiveness; and
• Resilience – reflection, recovery, renewal, strength, endurance, adaptability, perseverance, growth, and how these are manifested and celebrated within the community
A Council spokesperson said artists are encouraged to unleash their creativity across various mediums, including photography, digital art, painting, illustration, collage, and printmaking, to portray the essence of Livingstone.
“This contest provides an opportunity for individuals to share their interpretations of what makes Livingstone special, from its breathtaking landscapes to its vibrant cultural scene,” said the Council spokesperson.
“This competition is the first of its kind in Livingstone Shire and we are excited to see what wonderful creations entrants come up with.
“A panel of esteemed community artists will undertake the challenging task of shortlisting five entries from each theme, showcasing the breadth of talent within our community.
“But the excitement doesn't end there - the community will have the opportunity to cast their votes for their favourite semi-finalist designs from 22 April to 3 May.
“By participating in the voting process, community members can play an integral role in shaping the visual identity of Livingstone Shire.
“In recognition of their artistic contribution, the winners will be awarded a $300 Honorarium as a token of appreciation for their role in enhancing the visual vibrancy of our Shire.”
If successful, it’s hoped the contest will become an annual or bi-annual tradition, contributing to the ongoing beautification of public spaces within Livingstone.
While the street flag poles proudly stand in the Shire’s civic centre, Yeppoon, submissions celebrating the broader Livingstone community are encouraged.
Submissions for the contest are now open and will be accepted until 5:00pm on Friday, 19 April 2024.
