Livingstone Shire Council was joined by dignitaries and the community to proudly open and celebrate the official completion of The Station today – a transformative project set to redefine the western end of Yeppoon's CBD.

This milestone marks the culmination of dedicated efforts to create a dynamic community space with resilience at its core.

With works commencing in 2023, The Station precinct will double as both a vibrant community hotspot and a crucial recovery space in the aftermath of disasters.

Mayor Adam Belot and fellow Councillors, alongside esteemed guests including Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry and representatives from Yeppoon-based company Limestone Pacific Pty Ltd, gathered with the community to celebrate the realisation of this vision.

The $2.5 million funding secured by the Council from the Australian Government's Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.

This investment facilitated the construction of outdoor undercover areas, a multi-purpose stage, amenities building, community outdoor area and play equipment, ensuring The Station serves as a versatile space for diverse community needs.

Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Murray Watt expressed enthusiasm for the project's potential to bolster local resilience and unity.

"The Albanese Government is committed to supporting communities in their journey towards recovery and growth," Minister Watt said.

“Milestones like these are such a great example of what Commonwealth funding can do to help communities rebuild when disasters strike.”

Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Coalition Government and affected communities, emphasising the importance of projects like The Station in fostering long-term recovery and resilience.

“I am proud to see another project I fought hard to secure funding for reach completion that will benefit the Capricorn Coast community following natural disasters for years to come,” Ms Landry said.

The Member for Keppel and Assistant Education Minister Brittany Lauga said the Queensland Government's significant contribution, totalling almost $1 million, had played an important part in restoring the heritage-listed railway building and facilitating essential infrastructure development, setting the stage for The Station to become a cornerstone of the Yeppoon township.

“The completion of this major project provides a renewed confidence for the region that will assist in attracting private sector investment opportunities into Yeppoon, while reinvigorating the social and community activity of the town centre,” Ms Lauga said.

Mayor Adam Belot expressed his excitement for the project's potential to activate the western end of the Yeppoon town centre, enriching the social and cultural fabric of the wider community.

“Under an agreement with Limestone Pacific Pty Ltd, the Western precinct of The Station will serve as a versatile hub, capable of activating community recovery efforts in times of crisis and hosting vibrant events year-round,” Mayor Belot said.

“During its day-to-day use, the precinct will welcome locals and visitors alike to an inviting community space that will feature family-friendly dining options, an outdoor area including lawns and gardens, bar and taproom, as well as amenities surrounding the heritage railway building.

“It’s important to note that the project plans have been designed to ensure the heritage character is maintained, with the station building itself being state heritage listed.

“This project is testament to the brilliant outcomes that can be achieved when all levels of Government work in collaboration with one another for the benefit of the community.

“Council would like to sincerely thank the Australian Government for their generous funding contribution towards this significant infrastructure project, that will transform the visual appeal and streetscape of Yeppoon’s town centre.”

Rob McElhenny, director of Limestone Pacific Pty Ltd, shared the company’s vision for The Station precinct as a welcoming community space that honours and showcases the rich heritage of the area.

"The Station 4703" will feature alfresco dining, live music, and a taphouse showcasing craft beers from independent Australian micro-breweries, creating a vibrant addition to the Livingstone Shire community,” Mr McElhenny said.

“It will also provide ongoing employment and training opportunities to locals looking for experience in the hospitality industry.

“We’re incredibly proud to not only construct and deliver this project to the community, but also to manage the site as lessees and see the benefits it will provide residents and visitors firsthand.”
