‘Wellness at the Coast’ puts spotlight on mental health with free community event
Livingstone Shire Council’s first public event since COVID-19 will take place this Friday in a bid to promote good mental health in the community.
Taking time for yourself is the focus of Council’s annual ‘Wellness at the Coast’ event, which will be live streamed to the public for those who can’t attend.
Organised as part of Queensland Mental Health Week (10-18 October), the event aims to tackle stigma and promote mental health and wellbeing.
Portfolio holder of Vibrant Community (Tourism, Events and Culture), Councillor Tanya Lynch, said this year’s event was carefully organised to adhere to health authorities’ directives surrounding COVID-19, including social distancing.
“The focus of this event couldn’t be timelier for the community with COVID-19 impacting everybody’s lives and mental health,” Cr Lynch said.
“It’s vital we all take the time to look after ourselves and others in such challenging circumstances.
“The free event includes sunrise yoga, followed by a variety of workshops alongside stallholders with information and resources about overall wellness and mental health.
“The main event is being held at the Yeppoon Town Hall so Council officers can monitor social distancing restrictions.
“It’s fantastic to see such an overwhelming response to the event already, with the majority of tickets snapped up within a few weeks and now booked out.
“For those who aren’t able to attend, the entire event will be live streamed to Council’s Facebook page from 9am.”
About half of all Australians experience mental health issues in their lifetime and about one in five Australians experience a mental health issue in any one year.
“Mental health can affect anyone. If you are suffering from mental health issues or know someone who is, please talk to your local GP or visit the Capricorn Coast Hospital and Health Service,” Cr Lynch said.
“Alternatively, one of our staff members located at The Community Centre in John Street Yeppoon can also direct you to the best available support services.”
Council would like to thank the Queensland Government and Carinity Education Rockhampton for sponsoring and supporting the event.
