Community invited to Get Ready Day 2020 – Looking back, planning ahead

Back

Residents are being invited to attend a free, fun family day on Sunday, 29 November, from 9am to 1pm, to learn how they can get ready for the upcoming storm and cyclone season and join in on the action with demonstrations and displays.

To be held at The Hub in Beaman Park, Yeppoon, the event aims to help the community to better understand the risk of storms, coastal hazards, tsunamis, storm surges, cyclones, and bushfires.

Chair of the Livingstone Shire Local Disaster Management Group, Mayor Andy Ireland, said Get Ready Day played an important role in reminding the community of the potential hazards and dangers during storm and cyclone season.

“As we’ve already seen in recent months, with severe storm activity including hail, as well as last year’s devastating bushfires, anything can happen at any time and conditions can change in an instant. That’s why it’s important to understand what our role is and how that affects each community member’s role during a disaster,” Mayor Ireland said.

“As we reach the sixth anniversary of ex-tropical Cyclone Marcia and the one-year anniversary of the Cobraball bushfires earlier this month, it is a timely and important opportunity for Council to identify local risks and hazards, promote resilience through the Get Ready initiative, and share information on how disasters are managed.

“It’s also a chance for the community to speak one-on-one with emergency service agencies to get a better insight into the strategic operations in place for our region when a disaster occurs.

“Residents will also get to meet Council’s newest disaster awareness crusader, Resilient Ricki, who will be welcoming the community to the event and encouraging disaster preparedness.

“Council would like to thank the Commonwealth Government, Queensland Government, and Queensland Reconstruction Authority for their support of the event in partnership with Livingstone Shire Council.

“Multiple agencies will be on hand with advice and information that can help you put together your ‘what-if’ plan, so I encourage everyone to come along to find out more about coastal hazards with interactive activities, demonstrations, and family entertainment.”
