Council smiles about the number of pets released back to their owners

Livingstone Shire Council has something to smile about following the Christmas and New Year festive period.

New statistics have revealed a significant increase in the number of pets released back to their owners or rehomed between 1 January - 30 November last year.

Portfolio holder of Water, Waste management and the Environment, Councillor Andrea Friend, said this is wonderful news to start the new year.

“263 dogs were impounded and of those 194 (73.7 per cent) were released back to the owner and 56 were adopted (21.8 per cent),” Cr Friend said.

“70 cats were impounded during the same period, nine returned to the owner (13 per cent) and 50 were adopted (71 per cent).”

Council is committed to protecting the welfare of animals and safeguarding their future so that, where possible, they are able to return to or find their forever homes.

“Unfortunately, due to health and behavioural issues, some animals aren’t suitable to be rehomed as they could pose a risk to the community,” Cr Friend said.

“Council collaborates closely with three animal welfare organisations who work tirelessly to achieve a good outcome for these animals including Capricorn Animal Aid, Four Paws and RSPCA.

“Impounded pets that are not able to be reunited with their owners via an animal registration tag, microchipping, or lost pet section of our website, are advertised through these groups.

“Without their help, a large number of animals would not be rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed. In addition to the tireless work by the local law officers, they are huge credit to Council and fundamental to the fantastic result we achieved.”

Cr Friend said pets are an important part of our families and communities.

“Part of responsible pet ownership is ensuring pets are properly socialised, trained and cared for,” she said.

“This includes registering and microchipping your pet from 12 weeks of age, de-sexing at an appropriate age, and keeping your pets’ details up-to-date.

“The annual registration period is from 1 September to 31 August and renewal notices are issued to pet owners who have previously had their animals registered with Council.

“Additionally, there are substantial discounts on registration fees for pensioners, desexed and micro-chipped animals.”
