New Livingstone Shire Council elective Rhodes Watson officially sworn in at declaration of office
Runner-up candidate from the 2020 local government election, Rhodes Watson was officially sworn in yesterday at Council Chambers as the new Councillor for Livingstone Shire Council, following the resignation of Councillor Tanya Lynch on 4 March.
At a special meeting on 8 March, Council resolved to seek consent from the Electoral Commission of Queensland to approach the next runner-up from the 2020 local government election to fill the vacancy.
Mayor Andy Ireland said he was pleased to welcome Councillor Watson as the newest elected representative for Livingstone Shire Council.
“Councillor Watson comes to the role with a vast knowledge of the Shire having grown up here and he certainly understands the community’s needs and aspirations. We’re looking forward to his contribution to the Council table,” Mayor Ireland said.
Councillor Watson said he was looking forward to working for the community and sharing their issues and concerns with Council.
“Over the years I’ve worked as part of many different community groups so I’m happy to finally be given this opportunity to serve the Shire as Councillor, and I take that responsibility very seriously,” Cr Watson said.
“Both of my parents served as Councillors in the late 1990s so I have an understanding of the role, and as a journalist I’ve been involved in covering Council news for many years.
“I’m looking forward to gaining traction on some of the projects and initiatives that are important to the community including improving the Shire’s road networks as well as measures to decrease budget spending wherever possible.”
Cr Watson will assume responsibility for the Vibrant Community (Tourism, Arts Culture) portfolio.
