Free pet micro-chipping on offer for lucky Livingstone residents

Back

For a limited time, Livingstone Shire Council is offering spaces for free microchipping under a new Council initiative to help families keep their pets safe!

Portfolio Holder of Waste, Water Management and the Environment, Councillor Andrea Friend, said microchipping is a vital part of pet care.

“Microchipping is very important for re-uniting lost pets with their owners,” she said.

“Should your pet go missing, they are far more likely to be reunited if he or she is microchipped.”

Cr Friend said the benefits of microchipping in terms of identifying a lost animal and reuniting them with their owners far outweigh any minimal, momentary discomfort.

“The procedure is simple and quick, and involves a small chip the size of a rice grain being implanted between the shoulder blades,” she said.

To be eligible:

  • Pets must be registered with Livingstone Shire Council
  • Pets must be over eight weeks old
  • Owners and pets must be available for microchipping on May 22, May 29 and June 5 between noon – 2.45pm

Additionally,

  • Micro-chipping is available for cats and dogs only.

In Queensland, it is a statutory requirement that all cats and dogs be micro-chipped by 12 weeks old and be lifetime registered by six months.

Cr Friend said Council is working in conjunction with Acacia Veterinary Surgery in Yeppoon and Emu Park for the duration of the campaign.

“Their clinic has been locally owned and operated for over 20 years,” she said.

“They offer a complete range of pet care, from general advice, to medical treatments, to surgery. Council is extremely pleased to have them on board.”
