A step closer to a sustainable future with launch of Draft Waste Management Strategy!

Back
As the nation continues to prioritise the importance of sustainability and waste reduction, Livingstone Shire Council is proud to be an advocate on a local level, introducing its first Draft Waste Management Strategy!

From today, residents will have the chance to provide their feedback on the draft document, which outlines the strategies Council will employ to promote and support the community as we transition to a circular economy, and to position the Livingstone community on a path towards a zero waste community in the future.

Councillor Andrea Friend, Portfolio holder of Water, Waste Management and the Environment, said the strategy had been developed to improve the community’s understanding of waste issues and impacts and then help individuals to change their behaviours to minimise negative impacts.

“In February 2021, Council asked for community input to the proposed strategy and received over 100 responses. The insights gathered through this consultation has informed the development of this Draft Waste Strategy,” Cr Friend said.

“The aim of the Strategy is to formalise Council and community sustainability objectives, create a fundamental behavioural shift towards a circular economy (continual use of resources) and ultimately strive towards becoming a zero-waste community, through resource recovery and achieving excellence in waste avoidance and management.”

The Waste Management Strategy will enable key stakeholders – Council, businesses and residents – to become more aware of and better able to deliver ‘best practice’ sustainable waste avoidance and management.

“Waste avoidance and management is a complex environmental, economic, social, cultural and regulatory challenge that affects us all. Waste management is a rapidly changing space targeting a circular economy rather than a linear one,” Cr Friend said.

“The draft strategy also provides a clear strategic direction and action plan for Council out to 2030, to keep pace with the changing policy and legislative environment as well as community expectations.

“Livingstone Shire Council strives to create a sustainable future for our community as also outlined in the Livingstone Community Plan: Towards 2050, and encourages all residents and ratepayers to take part in this important survey.”

To take part in the survey, open until Sunday 18 July 2021, please visit:

Physical copies of the document and feedback forms will be available at all Livingstone Libraries and Customer Support Centres.
