Get Ready Day an opportunity to get prepared this Storm and Cyclone season
Back
As Storm and Cyclone season approaches, residents are being invited to attend a free, fun family day on Sunday, 17 October to learn how they can get ready for the upcoming season and join in on the action with demonstrations and displays.
To be held at Bell Park, in Emu Park, from 9am to 1pm, the event aims to help the community to better understand the risk of storms, coastal hazards, tsunamis, storm surges, cyclones, and bushfires.
Chair of the Livingstone Shire Local Disaster Management Group, Mayor Andy Ireland, said Council had been working closely with local agencies and organisations to start its community campaign to Get Ready and be prepared for disasters.
“Council is undertaking a number of initiatives including Get Ready Day, but also encouraging wider community awareness through its latest online Disaster Dashboard features, as well as a two-day activation exercise at The Hub next month,” Mayor Ireland said.
“These activities also complement the recent Community Supporting Community Forum which was created for local groups to help them better understand how collaborating effectively will provide support to the community during the Response, Recovery and Resilience phases of a Disaster Event.
“As we’ve seen in recent years, with extreme weather events including hail, drought, flooding, cyclones as well as the devastating Cobraball bushfires in 2019, anything can happen at any time and conditions can change in an instant. That’s why it’s important to understand what our role is and how that affects each community member’s role during a disaster.
“I strongly encourage the community to come along to Get Ready Day because it’s a chance for residents to speak one-on-one with emergency service agencies to get a better insight into the strategic operations in place for our region when a disaster occurs.
“Council would like to thank the Queensland Government and Queensland Reconstruction Authority for their support of the event in partnership with Livingstone Shire Council.”
LDMG Deputy Chair, Councillor Glenda Mather said residents will also get to meet Council’s disaster awareness crusader, Resilient Ricky, who will be welcoming the community to the event and encouraging disaster preparedness.
“Author of the 'Birdie Books' Andrea Baldwin, will also be hosting a story telling session, puppet making art activity and 'Relaxing with Birdie' yoga sessions for the children,” Cr Mather said.
“Council knows the value of educating the community on disaster preparedness in order to build resilience, and the youth play an important role in this by sharing what they learn with family and friends.”
Livingstone Shire Local Disaster Co-ordinator David Mazzaferri encouraged residents and local businesses to take a closer look at Council’s online Disaster Dashboard and find out more about its three new interactive features.
“The updates have been established so community members can ask specific questions, view or upload images of disasters, sign up for opt-in notifications, or access the Business Portal,” Mr Mazzaferri said.
“These innovative features will improve Council’s interaction with the community during times of disaster. It will also help to provide valuable information to the emergency services to assist in the co-ordination of the disaster.”
