Heavy rainfall keeps Council maintenance crews busy

How many times have you mowed your lawn in the past few weeks?

Spare a thought for Council maintenance crews who are busy mowing nearly 8,000,000 square metres of grass which has flourished in the recent heavy rain.

The Samuel Hill Aerodrome, north of Yeppoon, recorded the most rain in Queensland last month with 627 millimetres in total.

Councillor Pat Eastwood, Portfolio Holder of Healthy and Inclusive Community, said the widespread wet weather has created a big job for crews.

“While the recent rain has been welcomed across the region, it’s also put staff a few weeks behind their mowing schedule,” Cr Eastwood said.

“Crews are working longer hours to clean up about 180 parks, sporting fields, facilities, and open spaces to get mowing schedules back on track.

“It’s also been difficult for them to access some waterlogged areas which need to dry out before equipment can be used.

“Council is impacted just like everybody else trying to maintain their properties and we thank residents for their patience and understanding during this busy period.”

Council estimates it may take up to four weeks for crews to catch up on the increased work load.
