Council votes for Strategic Review of Disability Access to Beaches

Council has voted to undertake an audit of mainland beach accesses, to investigate potential locations for disability access on Livingstone beaches from Bangalee to Keppel Sands.

Mayor Andy Ireland submitted a ‘Notice of Motion’ at today’s Ordinary Meeting, requesting officers to review the accesses to Livingstone Shire Council’s beaches, provide details on construction costs, and that the report be presented to Council in time for consideration within the 2022/2023 Budget.

Mayor Ireland said there are a number of community members who live with a disability or mobility issues, and are unable to enjoy the Shire’s magnificent beaches due to the lack of disability access.

“This is especially the case on Great Keppel Island where access to the island itself is extremely difficult for those with a disability, as there is no jetty or all weather, all tide access on to the island,” Mayor Ireland said.

“The issue on Great Keppel Island may well be addressed within the Master Plan for community infrastructure currently being prepared by the Queensland Government but the access difficulties for the disabled on mainland beaches still remain.

“While most of us may find a visit to the beach an easy activity, it can be quite challenging for those with a disability or people that rely on the use of mobility equipment, to get out and make the most of our region’s great outdoors.

“This is an important community initiative that aims to create further inclusivity in Livingstone, which is key in improving the liveability of the Shire, as highlighted in the Livingstone Community Plan: Towards 2050.

“Emu Park’s main beach access is a wonderful example of this, with matting being installed from the beach entrance onto the sand to accommodate wheelchairs.

“This project was made possible by a community collaboration between Council, Emu Park Life Saving Club, and the Iwasaki Foundation.”

Further updates will be provided on the outcome of the motion following officer’s investigations.
