Yeppoon Lagoon’s lifeguard pelicans among Australia’s best street art drawcards

The squad of lifeguard pelicans patrolling the iconic Yeppoon Lagoon has been named as one of the best public art experiences in Australia.

‘Pelicans on Patrol’, designed by artist Simon McLean, manufactured by ScreenArt and commissioned by Livingstone Shire Council, has been shortlisted for the 2021 Australian Street Art Awards’ Best Landmark Sculpture gong.

The awards recognise destinations like Livingstone Shire which are using outdoor art to attract visitors, boost their economy, and engage their community.

Mayor Andy Ireland said he was thrilled to see the vibrant street art recognised nationally.

“Being shortlisted in the awards further cements Livingstone Shire’s reputation as a destination for those who love to enjoy street art,” Mayor Ireland said.

“The colourful pelicans, dubbed Hughie, Dewey, and Louie were installed in 2021 and sit atop three columns in the lagoon and double as 25 metre turnaround markers for swimmers.

“The pelicans are a quirky addition to the popular Yeppoon Lagoon and bring a smile to visitors’ faces.”

Liz Rivers, Australian Street Art Awards Director, said smart communities promote their street and outdoor art as a unique landmark and that makes their destination immediately identifiable, highly attractive, and a drawcard for art-loving tourists.

“The Awards inform travellers of the magnificent array of publicly-accessible art that can be found in every corner of the country and the communities that have invested in these attractions because they’re keen to welcome visitors,” Ms Rivers said.

The winner of the Australian Street Art Award will be announced on 4 March.
