Pedestrian safety to be improved on major road in Cooee Bay

A zebra crossing will be re-installed on the busy Matthew Flinders Drive in Cooee Bay to improve pedestrian safety between the beach and Daniel Park.

At this month’s ordinary Council meeting, Councillors approved recommendations for the safety works to proceed.

Councillor Glenda Mather, Portfolio holder of Transport (Roads, Drainage, Pathways), said safety was a priority in the growing area more so now due to the increased visitor numbers who aren’t familiar with the road network.

“The Cooee Bay beach precinct is an increasingly popular place for residents, visitors and families to enjoy,” Cr Mather said.

“We need to ensure everyone has the ability to cross the busy two-lane road as they move between the beach, the car park, the amenities block and playground in Daniel Park.

“Although Council prefers a pedestrian refuge be installed at this location, Matthew Finders Drive Stage 2 construction works may impact the site in the future.

“Due to the size and complexity of the project, we believe it’s prudent to re-install a zebra crossing as an interim solution.”

The zebra crossing will be re-installed in the 2022/23 financial year, pending budget approval.
