Livingstone Shire Council is pleased to announce the adoption of the ‘Our Living Environment Biodiversity Strategy’ earlier this week.

The vision for the Biodiversity Strategy 2021-2027 was to create a living document that guides the Council’s future planning and project development, taking into consideration the conservation of natural assets and green corridors.

The document will help create an action plan that recognises, protects, sustainably manages, and enhances the natural beauty of the shire’s biodiversity.

Councillor Andrea Friend, Portfolio Holder of Water, Waste Management and the Environment, said the biodiversity strategy is an important document as it identifies Livingstone’s unique natural heritage, plants, and animals, as well as the important biological resources and how best to preserve the region’s biodiversity.

“The Livingstone community highlighted that the unique natural environment across the rural, urban, marine, and island landscapes, is a key value for why they love living here and want to see the natural beauty and diversity continue,” Cr Friend said.

“The biodiversity strategy and the video documentary recognises the special values of Livingstone Shire and the role of Traditional Custodians and the community in looking after the biodiversity, today and into the future.

“The reduction of Council’s carbon footprint, maintaining the richness of biodiversity, and continuously integrating sustainable practices and designs where possible into the natural resource management space are key short-term priorities within the plan.”
