Glenlee, Glendale and Rockyview are where they’ve always belonged

Livingstone Shire Councillor Andrea Friend is calling on Livingstone and Rockhampton residents to remember that the ‘northern suburbs’ have always belonged to Livingstone Shire and should remain a part of its rich history for years to come.

Cr Friend said that the three localities of Glendale, Glenlee and Rockyview have been part of Livingstone Shire since its inception in 1903, except during amalgamation of LSC and RRC from 2008 to 2014.

“Prior to de-amalgamation, the then Minister for Local Government, confirmed that the pre-amalgamation boundaries would remain, and rightfully so. Their connection is with Livingstone Shire,” Cr Friend said.

“When the grazing land in these areas was developed in the mid-1980s, it was LSC that supported the larger lot lifestyle for its residents. The larger lot lifestyle that offers privacy, kerbside appeal, nature, room to expand, space for the kids to play, and favourable resale values.

“Livingstone Shire has many similar rural residential localities, just like the northern suburbs, that define our shire.

“Whilst Council acknowledges that a percentage of local residents may support a boundary change, there’s no doubt that it will have significant consequences, which is why the ‘communities of interest’ in this unnecessary debate encompasses all of Livingstone Shire.

“The Queensland Government’s financial analysis tells us that for every property, rates will need to rise somewhere between $161 and $250 annually to fund the boundary change.

“It’s tragic to see that this land grab is causing a division between LSC, RRC and its people. A more collaborative regional approach better serves the residents of both councils now and into the future.

“This week, enrolled voters in Livingstone and Rockhampton will receive a voluntary survey in the post from the Electoral Commission Queensland asking whether you support the proposed boundary change. Impacts are for all ratepayers and residents, not just those in the three localities.

“Livingstone deserves a strong future!

“Please VOTE NO to protect Livingstone’s way of life, today and for future generations.”
