Matthew Flinders Drive works progressing despite delays
Works on Livingstone Shire Council’s Matthew Flinders Drive reconstruction project have been impacted by a number of factors that have caused delays.
Unseasonal wet weather, COVID-19 and industry supply have all contributed to the delays.
Councillor Glenda Mather, Portfolio holder of Transport (Roads, Drainage, Pathways), said whilst progress on Stage 2 of the reconstruction works in Cooee Bay appears slow, works are moving ahead.
“Much like the rest of Queensland, the ongoing impacts of interruptive wet weather has hindered the progress of on-site works,” Cr Mather said.
“Add the impact of the COVID-19 virus on our workforce and external contractors, along with delays in securing essential construction supplies, and we have a continuously disrupted schedule.
“The project team has looked for ways to address the widespread delays, and work has continued to progress by rescheduling planned smaller works within other phases of the project.
“Despite this, these challenges have negatively impacted the construction timeline, with completion now forecast for late February 2023, subject to weather conditions.”
The estimated $1.69m reconstruction project, fully funded under the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland (W4Q) program, includes renewal of the road pavement as well as upgrades to stormwater pipes, pits, kerbs and channels.
Cr Mather said it’s important for the community to know that while there have been delays, Council realises the importance of the infrastructure for both local use and serving tourism.
“The delays can be tolerated given the magnitude of the project but Council is confident the outcome will be worth the inconvenience,” Cr Mather said.
“Council understands how important this piece of infrastructure is to the community and is tackling the challenges to get the job done.”
