At a Special Council meeting held on Tuesday, 23 August 2022, Livingstone Shire Council awarded the contract for the design and construction of the Emu Park Sewage Treatment Plant upgrades to Liquitek Pty Ltd.

The $6.6 million capital works project is jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government, which has committed $4 million through its Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.

Councillor Andrea Friend, Portfolio holder Water, Waste Management and the Environment, said Council is pleased to award the contract, which includes upgrades to the aeration and control system and dewatering processes, as well as replacement of the main sewage treatment tanks.

“These upgrades will provide better control over the biological, chemical and dewatering processes, and ensure the treatment plant has sufficient growth capacity for the next ten years,” Cr Friend said.

“Improved aeration and sludge management along with enhanced process controls are significant components of operating our wastewater treatment plants and crucial to meeting environmental licence requirements.

“The upgrade also means Council can continue supporting local sporting groups as recycled water from the plant is used on the adjacent golf course and sports fields.

“Liquitek has a proven track-record delivering projects of a similar scale across Australia and understand the technology required to upgrade our plant in Emu Park.

“I would like to thank the Queensland Government for their support of this project.”

Member for Keppel and Assistant Education Minister Brittany Lauga welcomed the upgrade to the Emu Park Sewage Treatment Plant as part of Queensland’s plan for economic recovery and preparation for the region’s growth.

“This is great news for Emu Park and Livingstone Shire Council. These upgrades have long been needed and will ensure the plant can operate until 2030,” Ms Lauga said.

“By upgrading the plant we can ensure it meets Queensland’s environmental regulations and continues to benefit the local community.

“With more than $4 million invested to upgrade the treatment plant, this massive upgrade will deliver more jobs across the region as part of Queensland’s plan for economic recovery.”

The upgrades are scheduled for completion in 2024.
