Interactive public art project set to unite the Shire

Residents on the Capricorn Coast are encouraged to participate in the UNITY Project, an interactive public art project, which celebrates the uniqueness of individuals and inspires connection with the community.

The UNITY Project features 32 poles arranged in a large circle and will be placed at Bell Park in Emu Park from Monday 19 September to Sunday 25 September.

Each pole is labelled with an identifying statement and participants will tie colourful yarn between the posts that reflect their chosen identities, with the yarn intertwining and forming a web of interconnectedness.

Councillor Pat Eastwood, Portfolio Holder of Healthy and Inclusive Community, said that the project is intended to raise consciousness about the labels that people give themselves and others and to explore how this can both support and limit opportunities to build relationships with others within society.

“As more individuals contribute to the larger-than-life art project, the sculpture becomes an effective physical representation of the community’s connectedness and unity,” said Cr Eastwood.

“This project will celebrate the uniqueness of individuals and raises awareness of how labels, identifiers and stereotypes can impact our perceptions of the world and how we interact and relate to others.”

The UNITY Project is open to all members of the public from Monday 19 September until Sunday 25 September at Bell Park, Emu Park. Instructions on how to participate will be available from the Emu Park Library.
