Community feedback invited on Causeway Lake draft masterplan

Livingstone Shire Council is welcoming feedback from the community to determine how well the recently drafted Causeway Lake Revitalisation Project masterplan aligns with the survey responses provided in February 2022.

Recreation use at Causeway Lake has declined over the last couple of decades in response to severe shallowing in the lake. The Causeway Lake Revitalisation Project investigates options for reactivating the lake to create a safe environment for locals and visitors to enjoy.

Mayor Andy Ireland said during phase one of community consultation, Council received 750 responses, which demonstrates a substantial community interest in the precinct’s future.

“The survey asked residents how they interact with the Causeway Lake precinct, what they like and don’t like, and what kinds of improvements they would like to see undertaken in the future,” Mayor Ireland said.

“Feedback indicated a desire for enhancements in keeping with the current low-key nature of the area, protection of nature, serenity and family-friendly aspects, as well as restoration of historical use options.”

In collaboration with Council, design firm Place Design Group were engaged to interpret the feedback into a conceptual masterplan.

The plan includes shoreline edge improvements, improved picnicking facilities, new boardwalks and lookouts, walking tracks, formalised parking and access, and improved water access for small craft.

“In addition to the masterplan, further evaluation work has been undertaken to address environmental conditions and assess how the shoreline might be redeveloped to leverage the benefits created by dredging,” Mayor Ireland said.

“A third-party feasibility study funded by the Queensland Government was undertaken last year to evaluate dredging options and provides the clearest picture yet of what lake dredging will entail.

“The process of seeking approvals and securing funding for dredging means it may be five years before we see these improvements carried out.

“The Causeway Lake has the potential to become a key tourism drawcard for our region, and I encourage the community to review all elements of the draft masterplan and have their say by taking part in the online survey.

“This second phase of community consultation will help us progress to a final masterplan and be one step closer to implementing the plan.”

Consultation closes on 27 November, with the results expected to be presented to Council in early December.
