Council adopts new Shoreline Management Plan

Livingstone Shire Council has endorsed the new Shoreline Management Plan 2022 for adoption.

The Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) has been created to protect the natural environment of our coastal foreshore and beaches while supporting sustainable development within key coastal areas.

Councillor Andrea Friend, Portfolio Holder of Water, Waste Management and the Environment said the coastline of Livingstone Shire is 300 kilometres from the mouth of the Fitzroy River to Stanage Bay in the north encompassing coastal wetlands, estuaries and inlets, as well as extensive sandy beaches.

“These are all highly valued by locals and tourists for their cultural, ecological and recreational functions,” Cr Friend said.

“The previous plan was developed by Council in 2007, however, due to extreme weather events along with the implementation of the Our Living Coast Strategy and the Livingstone Community Plan in recent years, it has now been updated with over forty recommendations on how we can better manage and maintain our shoreline for the future.

“Some of the key findings include extensive tree loss and dune erosion, issues relating to stormwater drainage, infestation of weed species, and unapproved works within the dunal system.

“The recommendations will address these key findings by supporting the protection and sustainable use of the Shire’s shoreline, whilst also allowing the natural processes to occur with minimal or no interference.

“We place great importance on the health of our shoreline and Council officers have worked hard towards creating plans that ensure the successful management and maintenance of our coastline.

“Our coastline is one of the community’s greatest natural assets, attracting thousands of local and regional visitors each year. By creating this plan, we are ensuring the protection of our coastal foreshore for years to come.”

“Council has worked closely with stakeholders to develop this plan and our thanks goes to the Traditional Owners of Land and Sea Country for their vast knowledge and input.

“Thanks also goes to all the voluntary organisations who work tirelessly to maintain and protect our extensive coastline.”
