Relay walks put domestic violence in the spotlight

Livingstone Shire Council is helping show support for those affected by domestic and family violence by organising two community relay walks on Monday 28 November.

Residents are invited to participate in either of the two Red Bench walks, starting from both Yeppoon and Emu Park at 5.45 am.

During this year’s United Nations 16 Days of Activism, Livingstone Shire Council is proud to play a significant role in highlighting the issue of domestic and family violence by creating a zero-tolerance community, which supports broader social care and well-being.

Councillor Pat Eastwood, Portfolio Holder of Healthy and Inclusive Community said that the Red Bench Walks are a reminder that people in our community are affected by family and domestic violence, and that support is always available.

“The Red Rose Foundation launched the Red Bench Project which sees a Red Bench placed in a highly visible location, aiming to raise public awareness and provide an opportunity for this important issue to remain at the forefront of the community’s mind,” said Cr Eastwood.

“Livingstone Shire Council is proud to have two red benches installed in the shire – one is located at the Respect Tree on Farnborough Road and the other can be found at the Singing Ship in Emu Park. These will be used as marker points for the scheduled walks.”

“I encourage residents to come along and be a part of these walks to show support for this important cause that affects many members of our community.

“Domestic violence is a scourge on our society and as a local government we take our commitment to trying to tackle this issue very seriously.”
