Four-wheel drive beach access survey launched
Community feedback is being sought on four-wheel-drive (4WD) beach access at Livingstone Shire’s southern beaches.
Livingstone Shire Council has today launched a survey to determine if there is support to allow recreational vehicle access on unpopulated bathing reserves such as Ritamada Beach Emu Park, Timbers Beach Zilzie and Long Beach Joskeleigh.
The consultation process follows a notice of motion that Councillor Adam Belot put forward at the Ordinary Council meeting on 15 November 2022, where Council resolved to undertake public consultation before deciding whether to establish a ‘Southern Beach Reference Group’ responsible for providing recommendations to Council regarding vehicular usage within these areas.
Under the current Local Law driving on any beach, other than Farnborough Beach north of Hinz Avenue, is prohibited, however certain beaches permit access for the purpose of launching and retrieiving a boat.
Councillor Adam Belot said the consultation is in response to residents in the South of the Shire requesting vehicle access at beaches that are well away from urban communities.
“We acknowledge the requests received, however before determining our position and making a plan moving forward, we want to hear the community’s thoughts,” Cr Belot said.
“The matter of vehicles on Livingstone Shire beaches has been a hot topic over the past year.
“As a result, we’re conducting a survey to hear the community’s views on whether they support 4WD beach access at the southern end of the coast.
“The survey also provides an opportunity for residents to indicate if they are interested in being a member of the reference group if one is formed.
“If Council decides to establish the reference group, it will be made up of a diverse group of residents and stakeholders who will look at all possibilities and consider all factors.”
