Have your say, Farnborough Beach Vehicle Access

Back

Livingstone Shire Council has initiated a survey to encourage public participation, following the conclusion of a temporary road closure trial at Farnborough Beach.

The three-month trial, which restricted vehicle access on Farnborough Beach between Hinz Avenue, Bangalee and Sandy Point between the hours of 8.00pm and 4.00am, concluded on 31 January 2023.

The trial was aimed at mitigating the impact of reckless driver behaviour on the environment and nearby residents, following advice from Queensland Police Service, State Government departments, Fitzroy Basin Association, Council officers, residents, and local surfing and four-wheel-driving groups.

Councillor Adam Belot, portfolio holder of Organisational Performance and Bangalee Beach Access Reference Group member, expressed his satisfaction with the low number of motorists accessing the beach during the restricted hours.

“Council acknowledges and values the responsibility demonstrated by the community during the trial period and recognises that it's a shared frustration when the actions of a few affect the majority.

“It’s now time to assess the outcomes of the trial to understand what worked well and what didn’t work so well by offering community members the chance to share their opinions on the trial and hours of vehicular access.

“Council research has highlighted that there is a precedence with other Queensland Coastal Councils to regulate vehicles away from urbanised communities, however through responsible planning and reasonable regulations, Council is committed to keeping Farnborough beach open to vehicles, while prioritising safety and environmental sustainability.

“I urge everyone to participate in the survey as it will assist Council in making an informed decision about the future of vehicle access at Farnborough Beach as well as assist with the development of an overall masterplan.”

Motorists enjoying Farnborough Beach are reminded to drive on the hard sand below the high tide mark. Driving in the dunes threatens wildlife, such as turtles and shorebirds, and causes destructive coastal erosion.

Council wishes to thank the Bangalee Beach Access Reference Group (proposed to be renamed Farnborough Beach Access Reference Group) for their ongoing support and for working closely with Council before, during and after the trial.
