Council Pays Tribute to Shire’s Volunteers during National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week (NVW) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and will be held on 15 – 21 May 2023. The week-long event recognises the vital support that the millions of volunteers in our country provide to their communities and encourages people to consider volunteering.

Councillor Pat Eastwood, Portfolio Holder of Healthy and Inclusive Community, said Livingstone Shire Council has several community volunteering programmes which offer volunteers a sense of empowerment, positivity and belonging.

“Council currently has approximately 100 volunteers who participate in one of 14 programs, and all of them make a significant contribution to our thriving community,” Councillor Eastwood said.

“Our volunteers contribute to the beautification and revegetation of the Shire, propagate native plants, control weeds, and protect local biodiversity, support the community centre and the many individuals and groups that attend, showcase local art and culture and help build a resilient and connected community.

“The act of volunteering showcases each volunteer’s pride in the community and often make up the social fabric of their respective neighbourhood. They have linked their own identity and interests with the people they help in the community.

“When you thank a volunteer during National Volunteer Week, and if you don’t already volunteer, you may want to consider becoming one and giving back to the community. It’s incredibly rewarding, and you are guaranteed to make a difference.”
