Capricornia Access & Equity Group to Host Accessibility Awareness Tour in Emu Park
Livingstone Shire Council is proud to announce an upcoming 'Accessibility Awareness Tour,' set to take place in the heart of Emu Park CBD on Friday, 1 December, from 2pm to 5:30pm.
Coinciding with Disability Action Week (25 November – 2 December), the event aims to spotlight the crucial role of accessible communities in fostering inclusivity for all.
Organised by the Capricornia Access & Equity Group in collaboration with the Council and the Human Rights Commission Queensland, this tour offers attendees a unique and immersive experience through a series of accessibility challenges.
Participants, including Councillors and Council officers, will gain invaluable insights into the daily experiences of individuals with disabilities in navigating their communities.
Councillor Pat Eastwood, Portfolio holder of Healthy and Inclusive Community and member of the Capricornia Access and Equity Group committee, highlighted the tour's significance in actively engaging participants to promote inclusiveness and accessibility.
“Recent data reveals that around 24 percent of residents in Livingstone Shire live with some form of disability and we also have an ageing population with almost 20 percent aged 65 or over,” Cr Eastwood said.
Councillor Andrea Friend, a member of the Capricornia Access and Equity Group committee, said this immersive experience intends to deepen understanding among attendees, Council decision-makers, and local businesses regarding the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.
“Earlier this week, Carer's Queensland also delivered Disability Awareness training to Council employees and Councillors,” Cr Friend said.
The training aims to improve awareness of perceptions of disability, enhancing Council's capacity to provide inclusive and accessible places, spaces and services in the local community.
“It’s important that Council understands the diverse demographic profile of our community to ensure that we are best positioned to make decisions that support all people, including those with disabilities,” Cr Friend said.
Council's commitment through the Livingstone Community Plan ensures safe and welcoming places for people of all ages and abilities. The training and the upcoming Accessibility Awareness Tour contribute to fulfilling this commitment.
The Accessibility Awareness Tour promises a blend of education and enjoyment, sparking crucial conversations about inclusivity. To conclude the tour, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy snacks and light refreshments while reflecting on the insights gained.
