The inaugural Love Livingstone Street Flag Contest has made its mark as an incredibly successful initiative for community engagement and artistic expression in Livingstone Shire.
With over 124 captivating designs submitted and more than 3,000 votes cast by the community, it’s evident this contest has ignited the imagination of residents.
A dedicated judging panel, comprised of community members, meticulously reviewed submitted designs from across all six categories, shortlisting them for public voting.
Six talented local artists submissions were chosen by the community to showcase their flag designs along prominent streets throughout Yeppoon, starting from the beginning of June and continuing into 2025, between major events.
These submissions were themed around six different categories, including arts and culture, community, connection, resilience, active living, and nature.
The six winners and their designs, as chosen by the community, are:
• Nature Theme – "Prickly Sunset" by Nicole Thornton
• Active Living Theme – "Catching Memories" by Linda Weedon
• Arts and Culture Theme – "Sunny Afternoons" by Marion Williams
• Connection Theme – "A Tapestry of Coastal Life" by Caitlin Lever
• Community Theme – "Emu Park Jetty" by Alana Read
• Resilience Theme – "Tropical Endurance" by Nikki Wex
The culmination of the street flag contest will be celebrated in coming weeks at a date to be determined, where the winners will get the opportunity to see their works installed and erected in Yeppoon.
Councillor Rhodes Watson thanked and congratulated all the entrants for pouring their time, creativity and individuality into their designs, helping to shape the visual appeal and streetscape of Livingstone Shire’s major township.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have such a wealth of talent and community spirit within Livingstone Shire," Cr Watson said.
"Council takes great pride in the opportunity to involve our community in enhancing the Shire’s welcoming atmosphere and beauty of our surroundings."
The diverse range of submissions included paintings, photographs, and graphic images, all reflecting the unique perspectives of what makes Livingstone Shire a wonderful place to live, work and play.
Councillor Rhodes Watson said the Love Livingstone Street Flag Contest is a testament to the commitment of Livingstone Shire Council to foster community engagement and civic pride.
“It's hoped the contest will run annually or bi-annually, becoming a cherished tradition within the Livingstone community, and contributing to the ongoing beautification of our public spaces.
“We asked voters if they would like to see the contest return in future and we received an overwhelming response of 97% who said yes.
“Based on additional feedback received from voters and the community, future contests will have age categories.”
