Butterfly Day returns to highlight ecological importance of local species

Back

Following on from several very successful events in previous years, the Butterfly Day at Lammermoor Native Gardens is returning in late May to raise awareness about the ecological values of local butterflies.

The Lammermoor Native Gardens Butterfly Day has become a popular annual event with hundreds of people of all ages and varied backgrounds coming together and learning more about the region’s beautiful butterflies, their habitat and care.

The family fun day forms part of Council’s 'Nature Based Resilience Project', an initiative launched in 2023, funded through the Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Fund with the program jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.

The QRRRF project focuses on the Lammermoor Beach precinct, mitigating the risks posed by natural disasters and offers an opportunity for the community to discuss and understand the benefits of nature based solutions as a way of empowering resilience within the community.

The Butterfly Day event will feature guided nature walks with specialists discussing the behaviour and importance of butterflies in our environment, a kid’s costume parade with prizes for best dressed, arts and crafts and morning tea refreshments including butterfly cakes.

Organised in conjunction with Friends of Lammermoor Native Gardens and Capricorn Coast Landcare Group, the event forms part of a larger ongoing project that has included weed management, revegetation, and erosion control, with local Natural Resource Management groups keen to share with the wider community information about what makes the gardens so special.

Friends of Lammermoor Native Gardens, John Rivory said “The Butterfly Day provides an opportunity for families to learn about local butterfly species in a fun natural setting.”

Participants are encouraged to wear closed in shoes, sunscreen, sun-safe clothing, and bring a water-bottle.

Children are invited to showcase their creativity by dressing up in their favourite butterfly costumes for a fun fashion parade, with the chance to win an exciting prize for the best costume!

The Butterfly Day Event will be held at Lammermoor Native Gardens on Sunday 26 May 2024, from 8:30am to 12pm.
