Livingstone Shire celebrates its Seniors with annual activity program!
Back
Council is inviting Livingstone Shire seniors to celebrate themselves next month and join in a wide range of exciting activities and events on offer as part of Seniors Week 2024!
The week-long celebration, held from 15-23 August 2024, will promote positive community attitudes towards older people and ageing, provide opportunities for community participation to enhance community connections, and celebrate older residents and their ongoing contribution to the Shire—whether as volunteers or in the workforce, community leaders or carers, grandparents, or advocates.
The program will focus on ‘come and try’ sessions and other planned events including a garden gathering, live music and theatre performances, movie screenings, social events, as well as the 10th annual Seniors Expo organised by Oak Tree Village.
Recreation and Culture Committee Co-Chair, Councillor Andrea Friend said Council has teamed up with a number of local groups and organisations to host over 20 events and activities across the Shire kicking off from 7 August.
“This program celebrates the contributions of our seniors, focusing on the essential roles that older people play in our community and helping people of all ages, cultures and abilities to connect through a variety of events and activities,” Cr Friend said.
“From morning tea get togethers, chair yoga, gentle exercise classes, Tai Chi and dancing, to educational and information sessions, a movie screening, music morning and much more, there is such diverse variety of events and activities on offer for our wonderful senior’s community.
“The majority of events are free or low-cost, making them accessible to everyone in the community, encouraging participation amongst all residents.”
Recreation and Culture Committee Co-Chair, Councillor Lance Warcon said Seniors Week is a positive reminder that older residents are the heart and soul of our communities.
“The Shire’s seniors have been fundamental in helping to shape our region into the wonderful place it is today, offering expansive knowledge and wisdom, and it is important to celebrate their contributions in all forms,” Cr Warcon said.
“A very special 10th Annual Seniors Expo hosted by Oak Tree Village at Merv Anderson Park will also be held on 23 August and will feature a multitude of stalls and information on services and products available to seniors.
“Council would like to sincerely thank all of the agencies, service providers, community groups and organisations who have helped to make these events possible, and we look forward to celebrating with our local seniors.”
