Council Commences Expressions of Interest Process for Construction of Yeppoon Aquatic Centre

Council’s Infrastructure Standing Committee has voted in favour of commencing the Expression of Interest (EOI) process for the construction of the Yeppoon Aquatic Centre Project.

This strategic step aims to ensure the successful and timely delivery of this significant community project, funded by a $13 million grant from the Australian Government. The EOI process will allow the Council to seek expressions of interest from potential contractors, conduct market sounding to determine who is available to complete the work and evaluate responses to assess contractors' capability and capacity.

The expression of interest release date is Tuesday, July 9th. The contract award for the construction is expected to be in the last quarter of 2024.

The Yeppoon Aquatic Centre Project will involve demolishing the existing hall, 50-meter pool, and amenities, building a new 50-meter pool with wheelchair access, new filtration equipment, and new amenities, and installing partial shade over the new pool. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2025, with the EOI process being the first stage in selecting a suitable contractor.

The funding agreement does not include a replacement for the existing Learn to Swim, and there is not sufficient budget to accommodate it. The timeframes for the funding are relatively tight, with construction to be completed by December 2025.

Infrastructure Standing Committee Co-Chair Councillor Glenda Mather said the funding envelope for this facility is limited compared to other aquatic facilities under construction.

“This is a major project in our Shire, and while we are most grateful to the Federal Government for the $13 million. It will fall far short of including critical structures which will save young lives by early learn-to-swim classes and pool shade to prevent skin cancers in all age groups,” Councillor Mather said.

“Compared to pool constructions elsewhere, the $13 million although significant, would represent a substantial deposit of the project.

“The Yeppoon Aquatic Centre is a much-anticipated project that will provide significant recreational benefits to our community.

“The EOI process is a critical step to ensure we engage the right contractor who can deliver a high-quality facility within our budget and timeline.”

Infrastructure Standing Committee Co-Chair, Councillor Rhodes Watson welcomed this step.

"This new facility will not only enhance our community's recreational opportunities but also ensure accessibility for all,” Councillor Watson said.

“The inclusion of wheelchair ramps and family rooms with hoists demonstrates our commitment to creating inclusive spaces for everyone. We look forward to seeing this project come to fruition."
