Council encourages residents to get their hands dirty for the environment this National Tree Day!

Livingstone Shire Council is excited to once again join forces with Ian Weigh Toyota and Planet Ark for National Tree Day 2024, encouraging residents to roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty and have fun while making a big impact at this year’s planting day.

Development and Environment Committee Co-Chair Councillor Pat Eastwood said National Tree Day (Sunday, 28 July) is a great opportunity to maintain and enhance our beautiful environment for our local wildlife, as well as ensuring the region continues to be a great place to live and getting all the benefits that come from spending time outdoors.

“Over 27 million trees have been planted by Australian volunteers since 1996 as part of the program and we are excited to be supporting the goal of getting another million native plants in the ground throughout our nation this year,” Cr Eastwood said.

“This year's planting site will be located at Kemp Beach in Rosslyn, in an area where vegetation was previously vandalised.

“The planting will restore habitat for many special animals that rely on the vegetation found along our coastline.

“On behalf of Council, we’d like to thank major sponsor Ian Weigh Toyota for making our largest annual tree-planting possible.”

Councillor Eastwood added National Tree Day is always well-attended in Livingstone Shire and hopes this year’s event will be no different.

“It’s free for the whole family, so grab your hats, gloves, spades, water bottles, covered in shoes and sunscreen, and bring the kids down to enjoy a fun day out while giving back to our community,” Cr Eastwood said.

Planet Ark CEO Rebecca Gilling said engaging with nature through pro-environmental behaviours like planting trees provides an opportunity to combat climate distress, especially among young people.

“Along with the obvious environmental benefits, planting trees also provides hope for the future and helps people to feel they are part of the solution,” Ms Gilling said.
