Council Seeks Community Feedback on Ocean Park Avenue Trial Road Closure

Back

Livingstone Shire Council is inviting residents to participate in a community survey to provide feedback on Ocean Park Avenue's recent trial road closure.

In response to issues raised by local residents, Council implemented a trial closure of Ocean Park Avenue on 22 January 2024. The closure was intended to deter non-resident traffic, including heavy vehicles, from using the residential street. However, the trial also impacted local traffic, leading to further concerns from residents in the surrounding areas.

At a Special Council Meeting on 6 February 2024, Councillors acknowledged the ongoing issues and the need for additional traffic calming measures. The Council resolved that a permanent road closure was not the preferred solution and directed that further consultations and design work be undertaken to explore other Local Area Traffic Management solutions, such as speed humps.

On 2 July 2024, the Infrastructure Standing Committee of the Council decided to rescind the previous resolution from the Special Council Meeting on 6 February 2024, remove the three temporary one-lane slow points currently installed on Ocean Park Avenue, implement a temporary road closure trial at the western end of Ocean Park Avenue for eight weeks, conduct traffic counts during the trial to quantify its impact and reopen the road at the conclusion of the trial while assessing long-term solutions.

As the trial road closure is set to end on 4 September 2024, Council is now seeking feedback from the community to inform its future decisions. The survey will be open from Wednesday, 28 August 2024, until Wednesday, 11 September 2024.

Residents can access the survey on the Livingstone Shire Council’s Get Involved website:

Hard copies of the survey will be available for collection at Yeppoon Town Hall on Normanby Street.

The survey results and traffic data collected during the trial will be presented to the Council for further consideration.
