Livingstone Shire Council has approved a significant investment of $425,000 for the first stage of footpath and road crossing safety upgrades at the intersection of Clayton Road and Scenic Highway.
This project is a key component of Council's recently adopted four-year capital budget, finalised during the Special Budget Meeting held on 23 July 2024.
The planned upgrades, which will be constructed in the 2024/25 financial year, aim to enhance pedestrian safety and improve accessibility in this busy area. The project will be rolled out in two stages: an initial survey and engineering design phase, followed by the construction phase.
Three advance pedestrian warning signs will be installed to inform road users to look out for pedestrians. The warning signs will remain after Stage 1 is completed, forming part of the permanent signage solution.
The first phase, scheduled for completion in the first half of the financial year, includes a detailed survey of the area, the design of a new concrete footpath, retaining wall design on the southwest corner, and a review and upgrade of streetlighting where necessary.
Construction works are expected to commence in April 2025, with a focus on implementing the designed footpath network and associated safety improvements.
Mayor Adam Belot expressed the Council's commitment to enhancing infrastructure for the community.
“This investment is about ensuring our residents and visitors can move safely and comfortably around our Shire.
“The upgrades at Clayton Road and Scenic Highway are a critical step in making our public spaces more accessible and secure, reflecting our commitment to building a safer community,” Mayor Belot said.
Councillor Glenda Mather highlighted the importance of community input in the planning stages.
“We’ve listened to the community’s concerns about pedestrian safety in this area, and we’re responding with a project that addresses those needs.
“The survey and design phase is crucial to getting this right, and we look forward to seeing the results as we move into construction next year.
“With the increased traffic on our roads today, it is crucial that we constantly identify any need for improvement in the name of public protection.”
Councillor Rhodes Watson emphasised the long-term benefits of the project.
“These upgrades are not just about immediate improvements; they’re part of a broader vision for a connected, safe, and accessible Livingstone.
“This is just the first step in a comprehensive plan that will benefit our Shire for years to come.”
The Clayton Road and Scenic Highway intersection safety upgrade project is a testament to Livingstone Shire Council's proactive approach to community safety and infrastructure development.
