In a significant milestone for Livingstone Shire's infrastructure development, the much-anticipated road connecting Jabiru Drive to Yeppoon Road has been completed.

Construction commenced in September 2023, and the new road now provides vital improvements to traffic flow while supporting regional growth in the area.

The project, which involved the construction of a new road linking Jabiru Drive (east) from Plover Drive to the traffic signals at Yeppoon Road (Jordy Dr and the Yeppoon Landfill turn-off lane), was developed with the support of the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program, in collaboration with Livingstone Shire Council.

Mayor Adam Belot said the $2.1 million project represents a critical advancement for the region.

“This new road is an important step in providing a necessary transport link for our growing community,” Mayor Belot said.

“It will significantly improve traffic movements in and out of the Jabiru Drive industrial estate, supporting local businesses and boosting connectivity for residents and visitors alike,” Mayor Belot said.

“Council would like to thank the Queensland government for their $980,000 funding contribution towards this vital infrastructure project.

“The Works for Queensland program is a great example of what can be achieved when two levels of government work together.”

Member for Keppel and Assistant Minister for Health and Regional Health Infrastructure, Brittany Lauga, acknowledged the importance of the project and highlighted her efforts in securing the funding.

“I am proud to have fought for and delivered over $10 million in Works for Queensland funding for Livingstone Shire Council since I was elected, including this project in Yeppoon,” Ms Lauga said.

“Upgrades like this not only create jobs but also deliver important infrastructure for our community’s growth and economy.

“I appreciate the partnership with Livingstone Shire to deliver this upgrade to Jabiru Drive which will allow for the growth of the industrial area and improve road safety.”

Councillor Glenda Mather also highlighted the broader impact of the project, stating regional councils play a key role in making our communities vibrant and connected.

“This new road link will ease congestion and improve safety for everyone using this route, especially as our Shire continues to experience strong growth,” Cr Mather said.

“The new extension of Jabiru Drive gives industrial traffic direct access to the traffic lights on Yeppoon Road in both directions. This takes immediate pressure off the Millroy Drive-Yeppoon Road intersection where traffic currently banks up and is unable to get onto the highway. It will make a huge difference.”

Councillor Rhodes Watson said the project not only supports local transport needs but also sets the foundation for future growth.

“Council continues to focus on delivering infrastructure that meets the needs of both our current and future population, ensuring our region remains a great place to live, work, and do business,” Cr Watson said.

“This Council is continuously working to improve our large road network, which consists of over 11,000 kilometres of road across Livingstone Shire, and it’s fantastic to see this key linkage complete to provide more convenience and ease of access to Jabiru Drive and Yeppoon Landfill.”
