Livingstone Shire Council delivers enhanced vision for Yeppoon Aquatic Centre

Livingstone Shire Council is excited to announce a major step forward in the Yeppoon Aquatic Centre redevelopment, with the construction contract awarded to Woollam Constructions (TF Woollam & Son Pty Ltd) for $15.87 million.

This project, a transformative investment in the region’s aquatic facilities, is scheduled for completion by December 2025.

During the recent Ordinary Council meeting, Councillors approved additional funding from reserves on top of the $13 million Australian Government contribution to enhance the project.

This funding will incorporate significant enhancements, including:

  • Extended shaded roof area for improved comfort and usability.
  • Pool heating and thermal pool covers, enabling year-round aquatic programs and training.
  • Submersible swim wall, allowing the 50-metre pool to accommodate multiple user groups simultaneously. The swim wall is raised and lowered from the pool floor by using air and will be in two sections providing 25m lanes.

Mayor Adam Belot said this was a fantastic outcome for the Yeppoon Aquatic Centre and the wider community.

“Initially, we did not anticipate including pool heating, but I am pleased to confirm it will now be part of the design,” Mayor Belot said.

“This addition, along with extended shade cover and the submersible swim wall, ensures a fit-for-purpose, multi-use facility that meets the diverse needs of our residents and visitors.

“Aquatic programs and water sports can continue in the 50m pool throughout the winter months.

“We can also allow for different user groups and providers to use the 50m pool at the same time with the addition of the submersible swim wall that separates the pool into different user areas.

“It is a far better outcome to contribute this funding now to deliver a comprehensive facility, rather than trying to retrofit expensive add-ons later.”

Woollam Constructions, a leader in delivering major community infrastructure, expressed their enthusiasm for partnering with Livingstone Shire Council on this landmark project.

“We are proud to have been awarded the contract for the Yeppoon Aquatic Centre redevelopment," said Regional Manager, Hayden Ross.

“This project represents a significant investment in the community, and we are committed to delivering a high-quality facility that meets the needs of Livingstone residents both now and into the future.

“Our team is excited to bring our expertise to this project, working collaboratively with the Council to ensure the Aquatic Centre becomes a premier facility for recreation, sport, and community engagement in the region.”

Progress Timeline
Demolition works are set to begin in December 2024, with major construction starting in early 2025. The new facility will feature:

  • A state-of-the-art 50-metre pool with wheelchair access.
  • New filtration equipment.
  • Upgraded amenities with a Changing Places all-accessibility changeroom and a modern, community-friendly design.

Supporting the Community During Construction
To minimise disruptions caused by the pool’s closure:

  • The Learn-to-Swim program has been relocated to the Seaspray Health and Fitness Centre in Zilzie.
  • Extended opening hours at the Yeppoon Lagoon accommodate early lap swimmers (5am weekdays and 6am on weekends).

Mayor Belot expressed appreciation for the community's patience during the closure and as construction commences.
“This project represents a long-term investment in the health, wellbeing, and recreation of the Capricorn Coast and broader Livingstone community,” Mayor Belot added.

“We thank everyone for their understanding during this period and look forward to delivering a facility that will serve our region for generations to come.

“Council remains committed to keeping residents informed and will provide regular updates as the project progresses.”
