As 2024 draws to a close, Council is celebrating the outstanding contributions of the Youth Action Group (YAG), acknowledging the dedication, creativity, and hard work of this vibrant and diverse group of young people.

This year, YAG has successfully delivered five remarkable projects addressing key youth concerns across the Shire.

From hosting a community Easter egg hunt for 80 children to co-designing sun safety initiatives with Queensland Health, their efforts have made a meaningful impact.

They also designed and delivered the youth room at the Yeppoon Community Centre, now a thriving hub for youth programs and activities, and contributed to spreading festive cheer by wrapping and delivering gifts for the Christmas season.

Livingstone Shire Council’s Co-Chair of the Recreation and Culture Committee, Councillor Lance Warcon, praised the group’s achievements.

“The Youth Action Group has shown exceptional commitment to enhancing the lives of young people in our community,” Cr Warcon said.

“Their passion and determination to create meaningful change are inspiring, and their work this year has truly made a difference.

“Council is proud to support and celebrate these young leaders as they continue to shape the future of our Shire.

“Let’s continue to support and empower the incredible young people of Livingstone!”

Youth Action Group member Brienna said being part of the group gave her an opportunity to give back to the community.

“It has also helped me in my personal development in so many ways. I have been able to learn new things, have new experiences and it has opened my eyes to some of the hardships that others in my community face,” Brienna said.

“Meeting new people and developing lifelong friendships through the Youth Action Group has brought me lots of joy. Especially looking back on all the achievements we have made throughout the year.”

YAG member also Simian added: “I really enjoy being a part of the Youth Action Group, as it feels good knowing I’m a part of something bigger, that helps give back to our community.”

YAG provides a platform for high school-aged youth in Livingstone to engage in community action, supported by Council’s Youth Services team.

With a small budget provided by Council, the group develops and implements youth-led solutions to address local issues.

The program not only empowers young people to bring their ideas to life but also equips them with valuable skills in leadership, teamwork, project design, and communication.

The sense of achievement and connection fostered by YAG has made it a standout initiative within the Shire.
