Step up and have your say – Consultation opens for Great Keppel Island's Boardwalk design options
Livingstone Shire Council is pleased to announce public consultation is now open for the Great Keppel Island (Woppa) Boardwalks project, a major milestone in the delivery of the Great Keppel Island Master Plan.
Livingstone Shire Mayor Adam Belot, said the boardwalks are an important part of the vision for the island, enabling visitors to safely explore the island’s pristine landscapes and boosting tourism opportunities.
"Great Keppel Island is a natural gem, and we want to ensure that any development respects the island's unique environment, enhances the visitor experience, and offers something for everyone.”
The proposed boardwalks will link popular tourist locations on Great Keppel Island, including Fisherman’s Beach, Shelving Beach, and Monkey Beach, providing safer, more accessible routes through some of the island’s most stunning coastal areas.
At this stage, Council has committed to undertaking the detailed design and evaluating the feasibility of constructing boardwalks, assessing different options, and ensuring the community is getting value for money.
This project is funded under the Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation’s Great Keppel Island Rejuvenation Fund, which is delivering priority initiatives identified by the community driven Master Plan.
Keppel MP Nigel Hutton said the Crisafulli Government is excited to see real action happening on Great Keppel Island and has heard from local residents, tourism operators and visitors around the need for better signage, safer pathways and connectivity.
"I urge everyone to share their experiences so local knowledge informs the designs and outcomes for this legacy infrastructure," Mr Hutton said.
"There is no doubt Great Keppel Island is the jewel of the crown in Keppel Bay and just as past generations have enjoyed the sand, sun and everything the island has to offer, projects like this ensure future generations can continue to enjoy all the benefits the island brings."
Mayor Belot reiterated the importance of community involvement.
“We are calling on everyone to take part in the consultation process to let us know how you think the boardwalks will be used, their location and how we ensure they are fit for purpose,” Mayor Belot said.
“You can have your say by visiting the project’s website or attending one of the public engagement sessions”.
"This is an exciting opportunity for the people of Livingstone Shire, and beyond, to make their voices heard and directly influence how Great Keppel Island evolves.”
Public consultation sessions will be held at the following locations:
- Monday 20 January 2025, 10am – 12.30pm
The Hideaway Resort, Great Keppel Island
- Tuesday 21 January 2025, 12pm – 1pm
