Council Strengthens Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusion
Livingstone Shire Council is reaffirming its dedication to access, equity, and inclusion by continuing its strong partnership with the Capricornia Access and Equity Group (CAEG).
Ahead of CAEG’s deputation to Council on 4 February 2025, Council acknowledges the critical role of inclusive infrastructure and services in ensuring all residents can fully participate in their community.
Mayor Adam Belot welcomed the deputation and the opportunity for further collaboration.
“I believe we are a very caring and inclusive Community by nature, and this is a chance to identify ways that we can be inclusive in practical ways,” Mayor Belot said.
“An inclusive community benefits everyone and this marks a significant step forward in embedding accessibility considerations within Council’s planning and decision-making processes.”
Recreation and Culture Committee Co-Chair Lance Warcon said a proactive and collaborative approach to accessibility and inclusion is key to achieving positive outcomes.
“Council, through Accessibility Capricornia and in collaboration with CAEG, can ensure that accessibility is not an afterthought, but a fundamental part of every project we deliver,” Cr Warcon said.
Development and Environment Committee Co-Chair Councillor Wade Rothery acknowledged that while compliance with building codes is essential, true accessibility goes beyond the minimum standards.
“Council is committed to strengthening consultation processes and advocating for development that genuinely meets the needs of people with disability, their families, and carers,” Cr Rothery said.
“While the minimum accessibility standards in the Building Code of Australia (BCA) are technically compliant, they are outdated and do not accurately reflect the needs of the community or best practice for inclusion.
“There is a clear distinction between what is required under the BCA and what represents truly accessible and inclusive design. Council will continue working with developers to encourage design solutions that go beyond the minimum and better meet the needs of all community members.”
Recreation and Culture Committee Co-Chair Andrea Friend and long-time member of Accessibility Capricornia is passionate about accessibility and inclusion and is very pleased with the unanimous support from Council.
“It is wonderful to see that Council is in full support of progressing initiatives that ensure all residents can fully participate in their community.
“As we move forward, Council will continue to advocate for change, review its processes and investigate the building code impediments to ensure that future projects create a more inclusive Livingstone Shire.”
