Have your say on the Lex Semple Park Waterway Naturalisation Upgrade
Livingstone Shire Council is inviting the community to have their say as consultation is now open for the upcoming Lex Semple Park upgrade at Fig Tree Creek.
The project aims to enhance water quality, restore riparian habitats, and improve community access to nature.
Deputy Mayor and Development and Environment Committee Co-Chair Pat Eastwood, highlighted the goal of the project is to transform the existing drainage system into a more naturalised waterway, bringing significant benefits to both the environment and the local community.
“This project is funded by the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchment Program, with the support of Healthy Land & Water and the Livingstone Shire Council, in partnership with the local community” Cr Eastwood said.
“By involving residents in the co-design process, we hope to build long-term stewardship of the site and ensure that the upgraded waterway remains a sustainable, living asset for generations to come.”
The project will focus on the restoration of native vegetation, as well as the introduction of native wetland species along the banks. The project will also include bank battering and revegetation to improve stabilisation, enhance habitat, and boost water quality through increased microbial activity.
Additionally, the ecological improvements will create a habitat corridor linking to surrounding remnant vegetation areas, supporting native wildlife and aquatic species, including those of conservation significance.
Councillor Eastwood said local teams from across the Council have been working together to ensure that the project is both environmentally sustainable and beneficial to residents.
“Once completed, Lex Semple Park will serve as a model for urban waterway restoration, providing a space that both locals and visitors can enjoy while demonstrating our ongoing commitment to caring for the environment,” Cr Eastwood said.
Consultation will offer locals the opportunity to provide feedback and contribute their ideas to the project, ensuring the upgrade reflects the needs and values of the community.
To have your say, go to the project page, or come along to in person pop up sessions in Lex Semple Park at 3-6pm Friday 28 February, or at 7.30-10am Saturday 1 March.
