Livingstone Shire Council and LDMG Provide Cyclone Outlook Update

Back

At a scheduled quarterly meeting today, Livingstone Shire Council and the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) discussed the potential cyclone outlook for the region following advice from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) regarding Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that as of 9am this morning Tropical Cyclone Alfred is a Category 2 system, located around 1000kms north-east of Mackay.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Mayor Adam Belot, reassured the community that while the BOM has issued the Tropical Cyclone Advice, there is no immediate cause for concern.

“At this stage, it is a bit of a ‘wait and see’ situation. Forecasting cyclones always comes with some uncertainty, but this is a timely reminder for residents to stay informed and prepared," Mayor Belot said.

"Council and our Disaster Management team are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining direct communication with BOM to ensure our community receives accurate and up-to-date information. There is no need to be alarmed, but we encourage everyone to take simple steps to be prepared."

Livingstone Shire Local Disaster Coordinator Greg Abbotts emphasised the importance of using this time wisely to review emergency preparedness at home.

"This is a great opportunity for residents to check their emergency kits, discuss their emergency plans with family, and take small precautionary actions such as securing loose items around the home, clearing gutters, and ensuring everyone knows what to do in the event of severe weather," Mr. Abbotts said.

Council will continue to provide regular updates through its official communication channels, including the Livingstone Shire Council Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/livingstoneshirecouncil and the Emergency Management Dashboard https://disaster.livingstone.qld.gov.au/.
