Council Reaffirms Commitment to Senior Citizens’ Group Amid Relocation Efforts

Livingstone Shire Council has a long history of supporting our senior citizens and remains committed to ensuring they continue to have a safe and welcoming space to meet and stay connected.

Since de-amalgamation in 2013, successive Mayors—Bill Ludwig, Andrew Ireland, and now Mayor Adam Belot—have backed the Yeppoon Senior Citizens, demonstrating a strong, tri-partisan commitment to their wellbeing. Over the past five years alone, Council has invested $500,000 in maintaining the old TAFE facility for the group’s use.

Mayor Adam Belot acknowledged the stress and uncertainty the relocation process has caused but assured residents that Council is dedicated to making the transition as smooth as possible.

“I absolutely understand the anxiety this change has created for our senior community, and I want to reassure them that we are fully committed to making this move with minimal disruption,” Mayor Belot said.

“I have instructed the CEO to put a plan in place to ensure the transition is seamless and that the new facility meets the group’s needs.

Council officers have been actively working with the group to assess alternative venues, including local community centres, club spaces, and shared facilities.

Mayor Belot also responded to concerns about Council’s role in the process, reaffirming its proactive approach.

“From the outset, Council has been dedicated to helping our senior citizens find a new home,” he said.

“While some reports suggest otherwise, I want to be clear—Council has been working hard to secure a suitable space, and we will continue to engage with the group every step of the way.”

Council remains confident that a suitable solution will be reached and encourages residents to share any ideas or offers of support. The wellbeing and social connection of our senior community members remain a top priority.
