Livingstone Shire LDMG Stands Down Following Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred

Back

As of yesterday evening, the Livingstone Shire Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) officially moved to Stand Down in response to Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

While Livingstone Shire was fortunate to avoid significant impacts, our thoughts are with residents and communities across South-East Queensland who are looking like they may receive the brunt of the cyclone’s severe weather.

Livingstone Shire Mayor Adam Belot said it was reassuring to see how well the community prepared for this event, while also acknowledging the rare and spectacular conditions the cyclone generated along the Capricorn Coast.

“Yeppoon’s Main Beach saw some of the best surf conditions we’ve experienced in years, with a clean swell attracting surfers and spectators alike over the weekend. It was fantastic to see the community enjoying such a stunning natural display, even as we remained mindful of the broader impacts elsewhere,” Mayor Belot said.

Mayor Belot said that while Livingstone Shire emerged largely unscathed, Council will now focus on assessing and addressing localised impacts caused by large swells and ocean conditions.

“We know Great Keppel Island (GKI) has experienced some significant erosion, and the Emu Park revetment wall has also sustained some deterioration,” he said.

“Following an inspection on GKI with Member for Keppel Nigel Hutton this morning, I can confirm that there has been no damage to infrastructure on the island and it is open for business, which is fantastic to see!

“We will be holding further meetings with key stakeholders to discuss how we can move forward and identify any potential support or funding opportunities to assist with ongoing recovery efforts.”

Mayor Belot also thanked the community, emergency services, and Council staff for their preparedness and cooperation.

Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and remain prepared as cyclone season continues.
