Cycling Without Age Yeppoon gains vital pathway through community grant

Yeppoon community group Cycling Without Age Yeppoon Inc. (CWAY) is celebrating a positive outcome this month, with the successful Community Grant application, enabling the group to provide safe and direct access from Capricorn Gardens Retirement Village (Blue Care) to the Capricorn Coast Pineapple Rail Trail.

The group received a Livingstone Shire Council and Bendigo Community Bank Community Grant of $5,000 to construct an 85-metre asphalt pathway, enhancing the experience for their elderly and mobility-challenged passengers.

The project aims to enhance the riding experience for residents and improved access to the trail for the local community.

Now in their fifth year of operation, CWAY is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to fostering connections, intergenerational friendships, and enriching the lives of elderly residents through free trishaw rides along the Capricorn Coast.

Co-Chair of the Recreation and Culture Committee, Councillor Andrea Friend, said these rides provide an opportunity for social interaction and time spent in nature, both of which have been shown to significantly improve mental health and overall well-being.

“However, access to the nearby Rail Trail has been challenging due to the lack of a suitable pathway,” Cr Friend said.

“This project highlights the importance of community grants in making a meaningful difference to local groups and their members.

"The Community Grants Scheme is designed to support grassroots initiatives that enhance community well-being and improve access to services and facilities.

“Cycling Without Age Yeppoon is a fantastic example of how these grants can create lasting benefits, ensuring our elderly residents have safe and enjoyable experiences outdoors.

“I encourage all local groups and clubs to explore this opportunity to enhance their programs and facilities.”

Keppel Financial Services Director, Sharon Delaney said the Livingstone Shire Council and Bendigo Community Bank Community Grants program is a fantastic way to empower local organisations and bring their ideas to life.

“By supporting these community-driven initiatives, we’re helping to create lasting benefits for the entire region. As part of our commitment to giving back, 80% of our profits are reinvested into our Yeppoon and Emu Park community through initiatives like this. We’re proud to be part of this partnership that strengthens the Capricorn Coast community.”

Cycling Without Age Yeppoon Inc. member Mary O’Donnell, expressed her gratitude for the grant and its impact on their service.

"This pathway is a game-changer for the residents at Capricorn Gardens Blue Care. Now, they will have a safe, direct route to the Rail Trail, where they can enjoy fresh air, nature, and social interaction,” Mary said.

“Our team of approximately 24 volunteers love to connect with our companions as we enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, share our stories, and experience the joy of slowing down and spending time together.

“Our companions start conversations with our volunteers; other passengers; and people in the community that don't normally happen – stories and life lessons are shared; and beautiful connections are made.

“We are incredibly grateful to Livingstone Shire Council and Bendigo Community Bank for making this possible.”

The group provides sessions across the Capricorn Coast from various locations including aged care facilities, but welcome anyone with a neighbour or family member who would like a weekend ride to get in touch.
