Council Advances Plan to Repair Emu Park Revetment Wall
The Emu Park Revetment Wall has experienced significant deterioration due to coastal erosion, worsened by the impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. In response, Council is prioritising this critical project to ensure the safety of beachgoers and the broader community.
Mayor Adam Belot reassured residents that Council is taking proactive steps to address the issue.
“Council recognises the urgent need for repairs and has already commenced survey and geo-technical investigations. A designer has been appointed to develop a fit-for-purpose solution,” Mayor Belot said.
“This design process will provide accurate cost assessments, determine budgetary requirements, and ensure the project is ‘shovel-ready’ for future funding opportunities.”
The repair of the Emu Park Revetment Wall aligns with Council’s broader Master Plan for the southern end of Emu Park, particularly around the Surf Lifesaving Club (SLSC). The plan includes:
- Seawall Construction: Strengthening coastal resilience against erosion and storm surges.
- Vehicle Access: Ensuring essential access for lifesaving and emergency vehicles.
- Land Tenure: Securing land tenure for the SLSC to support ongoing operations.
- Pathway Extensions: Exploring pathway extensions along the Esplanade to Shelly Beach to improve pedestrian access.
As part of master planning, Council has also removed selected trees in the foredune area, making way for replanting with native species that enhance local biodiversity.
Development and Environment Committee Co-Chair Cr Pat Eastwood emphasised the long-term vision behind the project.
“The much-needed repairs to the seawall, along with the broader Master Plan initiatives, are about making our coastline more resilient and accessible for future generations,” Cr Eastwood said.
“We understand that our community is passionate about protecting this beautiful stretch of coastline, and we are too!
“Council remains committed to ongoing engagement with residents and stakeholders, seeking funding opportunities, and delivering a sustainable solution.”
Council will provide regular updates as the project progresses and encourages residents to stay informed and provide feedback through Council’s Get Involved Page.
