Outcome of Special Council Meeting – Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure
Livingstone Shire Council held a Special Meeting today to consider a Notice of Motion to rescind the resolution passed on 15 April 2025 to suspend further action on advancing Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
As a result of the meeting, Council resolved to rescind the previous decision and move ahead with the EV charging station project.
The Special Meeting was initiated by Councillor Andrea Friend, who submitted a Notice of Motion seeking to rescind Council’s 15 April decision to suspend further action on the EV charging project. This motion was lost on division, with three votes in favour and four against.
Following this, Mayor Adam Belot formally presented a foreshadowed motion which also proposed rescinding the same decision. In addition, the Mayor’s motion acknowledged the complex ethical and environmental considerations in the electric vehicle supply chain and committed Council to advocating for improved transparency across the renewable energy sector at upcoming local government conferences. This motion was carried with five votes in favour and two against.
During the meeting, Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Terry Dodds PSM, advised that the supplier engaged to deliver the EV charging infrastructure in Yeppoon had formally withdrawn their involvement late Wednesday afternoon.
“The supplier cited concerns about potential future reputational risk, as well as high Ergon tariff charges,” Mr Dodds said.
“Following today’s resolution, Council will contact the supplier to inform them of the outcome and discuss whether they are willing to reconsider their position.
“If not, Council officers will confirm next steps with the funding body, the Queensland Rural and Industry Development Authority, to determine if alternative providers can be approached in order to continue progressing the project.”
Council acknowledges the strong interest this matter has received locally and nationally, and appreciates the community’s input. Council remains committed to seeking opportunities that support sustainable transport infrastructure across the region.
