Free Community Workshops focus on disaster preparedness and community resilience in rural Livingstone

Back

A series of free educational workshops on community resilience in rural areas of Livingstone will kick off this weekend from Saturday, 22 August at Marlborough.

The programme is funded under the CQ Bushfires Category C Flexible Funding Programme and aims to facilitate a series of community based discussions around disasters in identified isolated communities including Byfield, Cawarral, Joskeleigh, Keppel Sands, Marlborough, Mt Chalmers and Ogmore.

Mayor and Chair of Local Disaster Management Group Andy Ireland said the goal of these workshops is to build community connection and improve resilience within Livingstone’s rural communities.

“These workshops aim to discuss small scale projects designed to benefit the community when dealing with seasonal disasters, and build stronger community resilience,” Mayor Ireland said.

“Participants will also be offered the opportunity to share their views and feedback around disasters such as cyclone, flood and fire.

“Council’s Bushfire Management Strategy will also be provided as well as safety information on 'prepare, act and survive', fire mitigation, weed management and recovery, including how to prepare your mind for high stress situations.

“These are all valuable tools that will assist residents and each locality with understanding the import role each person plays when it comes to disaster preparedness.

“Council would like to acknowledge and thank the Australian and Queensland Governments for its funding support towards these useful community workshops.”

A series of mini ‘bushfire management’ sessions are also being held from 22 August to 5 September across various locations in the Shire, with more information on dates and locations available on Council’s website.
